“Have you spoken with Derek or Charity?” I asked Antoine.

Despite the revelation that I was in charge of things, I was still in the habit of deferring to Antoine and didn’t see myself changing things any time soon. That’s why I suggested he seek out the pack leader and his mother and discuss what we’d discovered. I also hoped Antoine could reason with them and temper the pack’s suspicion of Johnny, but only time would tell if they’d believe his story and accept him as their true leader. Or perhaps that was a bridge they’d never cross—or one Johnny wouldn’t even desire them to, so much time and animosity had gone on between them all.

I just hoped there would be some closure for his sake at least, and he’d reconcile with Charity.

“I have. Charity seems open to the idea of Johnny’s innocence and the tale of the dark fae. Derek? Well...he’s troubled and is holding judgment until we discover if we are dealing with this creature now or if it is some other kind of monster in their midst. Even the Order of Origin calling off their suspicions of the pack having a renegade hasn’t brought him around yet.”

Antoine looked as tired as I felt, and I wondered again about his constant state of fatigue. It had been this way ever since we stayed at my family compound in Mystic Valley, North Carolina. We weren’t due back for rest and relaxation until the Christmas holidays, so I felt justified in my concern. If Antoine had something going on that needed looking into, I didn’t want him putting it off until then.

“Antoine, is everything OK with you? I don’t want to pry, but you seem down. No, more than that. You look utterly exhausted.”

“I’ll be fine, Mags. I’m just getting old, I guess.”

I drew back and contemplated my friend, who didn’t look a day over forty. “You can’t be serious?”

“Perhaps I’m not. Maggie. I am well. Don’t borrow any more trouble than is needed, OK?”

Fine. Be all secretive and stoic. I knew I’d get whatever was bothering Antoine out of him, eventually.

We had just wrapped up another successful day, and my team was planning on grilling some steaks and having some thick-cut fried to go along with them. Perhaps even throwing in a salad to pretend we were health-conscious.

We were not.

Halloween was in two days, and we were feeling the stress of the entire celebration, what with a possible dark fae running loose and the mystery of the little girl still weighing us down.

“Hey, you two. Grab a dish and load up. Sven outdid himself with our meal,” Bella called out to us. She was munching on a giant T-bone and had juice and grease all over her face. Seriously, anyone would swear she was fourteen and incorrigible. “Man, oh man, you can’t beat a fresh steak in Texas. This baby was probably mooing yesterday.”

Thanks for the visual, Bella.

We sat around a firepit when everyone had finished drinking coffee, and Sydney opened a bag of marshmallows that she’d mysteriously had stashed in her RV.
